Simple Truck Camping Power Setup: Backup Without Overbuilding

Truck camping sits between ordinary car travel and a full overlanding build. For many weekends, the job is simple: keep navigation, communication, lights, and personal electronics working without turning the vehicle into an electrical project.

Separate everyday charging from backup power

Everyday charging happens while the vehicle is running: phones, watches, headlamps, and other small devices take frequent top-ups. Backup power is the reserve you use when the engine is off, when you leave the vehicle, or when a primary charging point is unavailable.

  • Use the vehicle's power for routine charging when it is safe and appropriate.
  • Keep a charged backup power source available for camp and unexpected delays.
  • Reserve critical power for navigation and communication before entertainment.

A minimal setup covers three roles

Most of the value comes from a setup you have tested before the trip — not from adding more gear at the last minute.

  • Vehicle charging: a compatible multi-port charger handles routine charging while you drive.
  • Portable reserve: a backup power pack provides power away from the vehicle and when the engine is off.
  • Safe placement: tested cables and a secure phone position keep the system usable on rougher roads.

Store and use batteries carefully

  • Keep power packs out of direct sun and away from excessive heat.
  • Secure cables so they cannot interfere with pedals, steering, shifting, or visibility.
  • Follow the vehicle and device manufacturers' guidance for outlets, adapters, charging, and storage.
  • Stop using damaged, swollen, wet, or unusually hot batteries and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Know when the minimal setup is no longer enough

  • Longer stays without driving may require more stored energy or a safe recharge plan.
  • A refrigerator, air pump, tools, or other higher-draw equipment may require a properly sized portable power station.
  • More travelers may justify another charging port or a second reserve, provided the vehicle outlet supports the load.

Keep the trail setup tight

Our Truck & Trail Kit is a three-item setup for everyday charging and backup: a car emergency power pack with tire inflator, a car tablet and phone mount, and a multi-port USB-C car charger.

Emergency power pack, mount and multi-port charger — the three roles, covered.
